The population of urban pigeons in Barcelona has decreased by 50,9 % in 3 years
Barcelona is one of the pioneers in the field of ethical birth control with nicarbazin. It was the first European capital to use birth control to control the pigeon population.
Barcelona started the method in 2017. Currently, the city manages 51 automatic feed dispensers in 47 city zones, including the Sagrada Familia. Now, 3 years later, the population of urban pigeons has been reduced to no less than 50.9%.
Striking result: Barcelona has set up 'control points' over the past 3 years. These are places where 'normal' maize was administered, more specifically maize that is not coated with nicarbazin. In these places the population increased by 11 % annually.
These figures prove how efficient birth control is to tackle an overpopulation of urban pigeons and to manage a population in an animal friendly way, without catching and/or killing the animals.
