Pigeon population decreased by 20% in the village centre
Because of nuisance in the village centre, Heerlen started contraception for city pigeons in 2021. Over the past 12 years, the municipality received some 175 reports of nuisance caused by pigeons (including droppings). Especially on the Bongerd and the Promenade, local pigeon colonies caused nuisance. Now, in spring 2023, the population has shrunk by 20%. The municipality is very pleased with these results, especially as it is a sustainable solution.
Heerlen was the first Dutch town to opt for Vets For City Pigeons' animal-friendly approach. Meanwhile, Groningen has also started up.
